New Jersey Randonneurs is offering a FULL set of qualifying brevets for Paris-Brest-Paris (PBP) in 2003. All rides begin in Princeton, New Jersey. Since this is a PBP year, each rider expecting to apply for PBP needs to start preparing and planning NOW!

Step 1: RUSA MEMBERSHIP: Make sure you are a Randonneurs USA member NOW - BEFORE the first brevet on March 29th or you won't be able to apply for PBP. Signing up the morning of the first brevet is not suggested. The later one waits to send in an application, the greater the chance of holding up NJ brevet results processing. If you signed up or renewed, keep checking the RUSA website for your number and expiration date. You need to have this information on the entry form - learn it!

Step 2: AIR TRAVEL TO PARIS: It's never too early to plan travel arrangements. The best company to book through is Des Peres Travel. Claus Claussen is the agent and fellow randonneur. Since 1987, he has been booking these PBP flights. Besides the price, his experience is immeasurable - especially for new participants. For example, there's a transfer from the airport to the hotel which can become almost impossible AND pricey ($100 - don't expect a Mercedes taxi to pick you up either!) - Claus can avoid any hassles by hearing from you. I plan to book through Claus.

Email (dptravel@primary.net) him immediately to allow him to get a good idea of the count for blocking seats. That means TODAY! The dates will be August 12th or August 14th and returning on August 24th. We need to keep the dates the same - unless there are so many of us it's possible to book two groups. Specify which airport is best for you - Newark or JFK.

My preference is 8/14 - 8/24 leaving from Newark. If we don't get 20 qualifiers from this area, we'll have to decide which airport is best. Out of consideration for New Jersians and Pennsylvanians, Newark seems most accommodating.

Step 3: PRE-REGISTER FOR THE BREVETS: Registration is available online at active.com and downloadable, mail-in PDF of the brochure. It's to your benefit to sign-up for all four rides, if you plan to qualify using NJ series.

Step 4: TRAINING: Start to train now - it's winter still and March 29th comes quick.
